There are essentially 2 main forms of teeth whitening (also refer as tooth bleaching) used by dentists. At Burwood Family Dentist, we also offer both options our patients.
Take-Home Teeth Whitening
-
A custom-made whitening trays are made to fit accurately against your upper and lower teeth.
-
You need to fill the trays with a special whitening gel and wear them once or twice a day usually for a set period of time (about 5-14 days), depending on the system used.
In-office Teeth Whitening
-
The whole whitening process is performed mainly in the surgery. This involves the carefully controlled application of bleaching agents to the teeth by the dentist, followed by the application of strong lights to the teeth to activate and enhance the bleaching process.
-
Sometimes also refer as "Laser teeth bleaching"
-
This whitening option is completed in a much shorter time than the take home option.
-
We offer not only one system but two popular in-office whitening systems: Philips ZOOM in-chair whitening (as featured on Today TV show) and Pola Office+ .

Dental
Pola Office +
Polaoffice+ is a unique formulation that releases the active ingredients immediately to initiate the whitening treatment. By breaking down and releasing the peroxide ions fast and effectively, pola’s whitening process is triggered and does not require UV light to accelerate the treatment.
Pola office + safely whitens teeth in 30 minutes at a neutral pH to protect your teeth and gum.
With 37.5% hydrogen peroxide, minimal chair time is required. The total treatment will take less than 30 minutes (i.e. time where the gel are applied onto the teeth with the UV light). Less chair time means increased patient comfort and satisfaction and decreased patient anxiety and time on the dental chair The unique 37.5% hydrogen peroxide formula ensures fast release of the peroxide ions to begin the brightening process. Pola Office+ is manufactured by SDI, internationally know Australian dental manufacturer, marketed in over 100 countries globally.. All of SDI's products are proudly locally made.
Take-Home Whitening vs In-office Teeth Whitening
-
Both methods are safe
-
in-office Whitening offer a much quicker option and overall may provide a more noticeable result, without the need for continuous daily application . The whole process will take about 1 to 1.5 hr (depending on the system used) while the take-home will take 2 weeks.
-
Not many websites would mention this but obviously cost is also a major factor one would consider one over the other. In-office teeth whitening treatments cost more than the at-home-do-it-yourself options. In-office or in -Chair whitening can cost twice or more than take home kit, This is because of the special whitening equipment, tools, extra time and care needed by the dentist to carry it out
-
Take-home options is a more affordable, but rely oneself to carry out the whitening treatment usually once or twice daily for up to 2 weeks.
What are the side-effects of bleaching?
-
Tooth bleaching had not been shown to cause any damage or weaken the tooth. It is an extremely well-established procedure in cosmetic dentistry. Hydrogen Peroxide is usually the main active chemical used and has also been safely used for many years.
-
There will be some degree of tooth sensitivity as expected with any whitening gels. This is mainly to cold and/or hot fluids or sometimes even air. These side-effects usually subside within a few days.
-
If there is sensitivity, wear times can be reduced or made less frequent
-
We may provide you some desensitising toothpastes or gels to help to relieve this discomfort.
Private Health Insurance Coverage For Teeth Whitening
-
Each health insurance set their own rules for teeth whitening.
-
There are a few health insurances that do cover some or most of the cost associated with teeth whitening, depending on your level and type of extra cover.
-
It is best for you to check with your private health insurance to see if they will cover dental whitening treatment.
-
Alternatively we can also assist you if you bring your health fund card on the day of the appointment, we can use the "quote system" from our on-site HICAPS machine. Quote system is available with most health funds including but not limited to: AHM, BUPA, CUA, CBHS and Medibank Private.
